It is hard to forget that the IT industry we are all familiar with today was barely an industry at all just a few decades ago. But thanks to the likes of Gates and Jobs, that has all changed.

In today’s ultra-competitive world economy, nations are investing heavily in technologies that make things happen faster, more efficiently and more cost effectively.

This has ensured that the requirement for highly-skilled technical labour remains high. But there are some sectors whose demand is greater than others, which puts highly skilled overseas workers in a minority – but an important one.

Estimates suggest that as many as 756,000 digital workers will be needed in the EU alone by 2020, while global demand for cyber security professionals is expected to grow to six million by 2019. As technology continues to evolve, the skills required by employers change too. The Internet of Things (IoT) has led to a rise in demand for tech skills such as data visualisation, programming and machine learning development. IT developers, IT engineers and analysts are also highly sought-after as are data analysts, IT database and network professionals, with many overseas working finding opportunities within these fields.
